It is almost that time of the year again and nothing inspires festive cheer like the magical glow of seasonal street lights.
As the city prepares itself to receive the annual facelift, Londoners are anticipating dazzling displays to be popping up around every district, with sparkling ceremonies hosting live music performances and plenty of festal fun.
Even though there will be ample opportunity to see London at its most sparkly, none of us can deny that the switch-on ceremony is not to be missed! Whether you are fanatical about all things Christmas or simple need an excuse to sample the range of mulled wine on offer, this occasion also promises top class entertainment as well as discounts in relevant nearby stores.
Here are our top places to catch the switch this year:
For those around the Holborn area, you are in luck! Head over to Carnaby street on the 7th of November to welcome some of the most talked about lights in town, addressing an environmental issue that has made headlines throughout the years.
Made using reusable materials, Carnaby Street has once again outdone itself opting for an ocean theme with a bubble-blowing whale among clouds of vampire squids and luminous jellyfish. Created in aid of the ocean conservation charity, Project 0, these aquatic illuminations remind us of our responsibilities even during the holiday season.
For our Chelsea residents, your treat will be equally mesmerising as King’s Road and Sloane Square prepare to get lit, taking inspiration from King Charles II’s crown.
Fun fact of the day: King Charles famously reinstated the celebration of Christmas following Oliver Cromwell’s ban on festivities for over a decade.
Regal heritage aside, make sure you save the date for Chelsea’s Christmas light switch-on on the 23rd of November. From 2pm, there will be an array of entertainment with special guest, Santa Claus, flipping the switch at 5pm.
What About Bankside?
No doubt this will raise a few eyebrows…
Indeed, it will require a ride up the Northern Line for most of our south-of-the-river residents but one should consider it a crime not to include this legendary shopping spot, especially considering that 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the creation of Regent’s Street.
Regent Street will be closing its roads from 4 pm to 9 pm on the 14th of November for its Christmas lights ceremony and be prepared – as usual, this will surely be the most popular switch-on evening! The stunning “Spirit of Christmas” angels are back this year to grace one of London’s busiest streets with their glorious golden presence. Soak up the celebratory atmosphere and keep an eye out for the star-studded line-up: @regentstreetw1
If you live Primrose hill way, we’d recommend the short journey over to Leadenhall Market on the 15th of November to kick off this festive season. Choirs, entertainment, competitions, and more, with the Lord Mayor of London switching on the Market’s thousands of lights and unveiling the stunning Christmas Tree at 6pm, the evening is bound to be full of Christmas cheer!
